The Most Impressive AWARDS 2011 – Download

A Look at the download games that impressed us most in 2011

Welcome to 2012! Just before Christmas we brought you our favourite retail titles from 2011 but what about the downloadable games? Which of these games stood the test of time and kept on impressing even after the first hour of play?  While many games are impressive at first, some can quickly decline in the fun factor while others truly shine even after hours of play.  Continuing with our first annual awards, I rank the top 8 download games of 2011 as the Most Impressive games that I consider worthy of your time.  These games went far beyond the first hour of impressive gameplay and kept bringing me back for hour after hour of continued fun.  So, without further adieu, here is The Most Impressive Awards 2011.

7) Outland

Beautiful visuals, a calming and peaceful soundtrack, and plenty of collectibles to keep you coming back for more, Outland really delivers the perfect XBLA experience.

6) Need for Speed Hot Pursuit HD for iPad

With short-lived races perfect for the portable device, NFS Hot Pursuit HD delivers on the tried and true Need for Speed experience with stunning visuals and a true sense of speed.  It is the perfect racing game for the iPad.

5) Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Boasting an incredibly wonderful art style, reminiscent of a saturday morning cartoon, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is vibrant, stunning, silly and irreverent.  The pleasant simplicity of this game makes this an altogether joy to play.

4) From Dust

From Dust is a fantastic puzzle just begging to be solved and one that can’t be left alone.  This game is meant to open your mind to new abstractions and provoke you into new ways of thinking.  Reminiscent to old-school Populous, From Dust is the perfect recreation of the God-Game.

3) Dead Space for iPad

Boasting a story specifically created for the iPad and one that tells a story leading up to the console’s Dead Space 2, EA has crafted a wonderful third person horror survival game for the portable platform.  Dead Space employs a fully voice-acted stereo soundtrack, including a complete movie-quality music score and immersive sound effects.  Awarded the Game of the Year on iTunes, this is worthy of your time.

2) Bastion

The Summer of Arcade brought us yet another winner this year in Bastion.  This is the kind of game that draws you in and keeps you wanting to come back for more. The humour, the narration, the imagery, and the simple but effective controls all combine to bring a wonderful addition to the XBLA library. Bastion will continue to be a fan favourite for years to come.

1) Orcs Must Die!

The perfect blend of Tower Defense and Third-Person Shooter, Orcs Must Die! is the kind of game that sticks with you even after you’ve finished playing.  Strategizing how to complete each level faster and better will permeate your thoughts.  It is perfectly challenging, insanely fun, and unbelievably addictive.  Orcs Must Die! is easily our Most Impressive Downloadable Game of 2011.
