The OMG! Hour: Episode 40

The One with the Rumoured Future


o much more information has come to light about the future of our beloved consoles.  One such rumoured future is that of the Free-to-Play model (F2P).  We discuss this model and whether or not we believe this is where things are headed as Wargaming.net Founder, Victor Kislyi, believes it is.  We also discuss the latest thoughts from Xbox founder Nat Brown who believes Microsoft is making a mistake with the Xbox; EA says the next generation won’t be backwards compatible; and Ben Kuchera says the consoles needs to deal with “The Minecraft Problem” in this next generation.  It’s an episode full of speculation and talk of the very rumoured future of the console business.  Finally, Sean attended this week’s X’13 Event in Toronto and tells us what he saw and played there. Hint: Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite!

  1. One aspect of the free-to-play and micro-transaction discussion that you didn’t touch on is the advertising and promotional aspect, which is often the part that bothers me the most. Advertising is rarely palatable in many situations, and when you play these more major free-to-play games (e.g. The Lord of the Rings Online), you end up constantly bombarded with advertising, promotions, sales, limited time offers and any number of other pressure sales tactics to entice you to lay down cash — they literally have to design the game to pester you for money. When that happens — when I sense the least bit of pressure to make a real-life monetary decision — I’m yanked right out of the game. All of the fun drains away, because now I’m thinking about my bank account. I play games as a stress-relief from the pressures of everyday life, and if your game is going to start piling even the smallest amount of financial pressure on me, then I’m out. I’m not saying I don’t want or expect to pay, just that I want to make that financial decision up front, get it over with, and get on with my game without advertising breaks.

    As an old married gamer, another aspect that concerns me a lot is the relationship of my children with the free-to-play games model. I often feel that they are literally designed to teach children NOT to know the value of money and financial responsibility. (I could go on about Microsoft Points vs. real world dollar amounts, and useless avatar item purchases on Xbox Live… but I’ve ranted more than enough, ha!)

      Wow. Great insight there Rob, those are some really good points. Additionally, a lot of F2P games use the social aspect to push the game to all your friends and I absolutely abhor that too.

      • That’s another good point! I’ve made it a rule never to sign into a game with my Facebook account for that very reason.

        Thinking about this also made me wonder about yet another aspect: addictive behaviour and gambling addiction. Certainly MMORPGs can cause addictive behaviour, and how hard will that be when they are saying, “just buy this little thing, oh, and this little thing…” until it’s a problematic amount of money for the addict? Likewise, in the mobile game space, some of the transactions that they are asking money for are really, really close to straight-up gambling, another potentially powerful addiction. (I vaguely remember reading something about the insane amounts of money some people put into Farmville.)
