Lost Treasures

War of the Monsters CoverWhen we think of fighting games there are some pretty big franchises that likely come to your mind. Since this is Lost Treasures however you can forget about all of those and today, I want you to think about War of the Monsters, a 3D action fighting game published by Sony and developed by Incognito in early 2003 for the PlayStation 2.

War of the Monsters is set in the aftermath of an alien invasion on Earth and giant monsters have been created to battle you and the other monsters.  If it sounds like something out of a B movie from the 1950s that’s likely because that is where the inspiration is drawn from.

War of the Monsters Screen (1)

Playing against the computer or another human player you will roam freely in a city area, taking advantage of the environment to deal damage to your opponents. Vehicles, rubble and steel girders are just some of the objects you can play with. There are a total of 13 unique monsters in the game and some pay direct homage to obvious inspirations. Congar for example
is clearly similar to King Kong and Preytor looks a lot like the giant Mantis from The Deadly Mantis, a 1957 science fiction film.

The game sold around a half million units around the world, with around half of that here in North America. It won’t be terribly difficult to track down a physical copy but they are getting scarce since most people that have it don’t want to give it up. It’s also available as a PS2 Classic available for purchase in the PlayStation store and playable on your PlayStation 3.

If you had the pleasure of trying this title during its initial release, you will appreciate going back to it. If you missed out, you’ve still got a chance to try out one of the PlayStation 2’s most under appreciated titles. Go on, get going – there’s a war to win!

Until next time, I’m Syd Bolton your gaming archaeologist digging up the lost treasures for you, right here on OMG! Nexus and The OMG! Hour.
