Interview with Lorne Lanning

Get ready for the longest episode of Lost Treasures of Gaming yet! We are pleased to welcome Lorne Lanning to the show this week to talk all about his Oddworld Inhabitants games, including Abe’s Oddysee, Munch’s Oddysee, Stranger’s Wrath, and more.  In this interview we get some real, down to earth, behind the scenes goodness about the making of these games.  As a first for the show, we even had the pleasure to have Lorne answer some listener questions.  Sit down, relax, and enjoy!


Some games are strange, some games are funny. Some games are quirky and some are just, well Odd. Some games are all of those things, and such is the case for 2001’s Oddword: Munch’s Oddysee. Developed by Oddworld Inhabitants this third game in a planned 5 game series was the first to come to the Xbox and was actually a launch title for Microsoft’s fledgling system.

Originally developed for the PlayStation 2, Munch’s Oddysee was a direct follow-up to Abe’s Exoddus, the second Oddword game that appeared on the original PlayStation. The first two games were 2D and this one was the first one released in a full 3D environment.

Taking a stab at a social commentary for events going on around the world, Munch’s Oddysee starts out with a frog-like Gabbit named Munch who’s species has nearly been commercially fished out to near extinction. You have to try and rescue eggs and Fuzzles and others along the way, which actually determines how the game will end. You can get both good and bad endings which can actually determine whether or not you get to play the last two levels in the game.

Although it was originally only released on the Xbox, Munch’s Oddysee was ported to the Game Boy Advance as a platforming game and then to the PlayStation 3 as an upgraded HD port in 2011 and in 2016 an updated PC version will come out on Steam. Although, by the developers own admission, the game lacked some polish of other triple-A titles it still provided a solid unique game experience and has generally been well received. It’s definitely worth giving a try especially with the new hi-resolution versions!
