OMG! it’s Eagle Flight [PSVR]

Eagle Flight, from Ubisoft, for PlayStation VR is a flight simulator that puts you in the wings of a bald eagle.  With both a single player campaign and a fast and intense multiplayer mode, Eagle Flight could very well be the must buy title for PlayStation VR.  Watch as Sean and Jeff, from The OMG! Hour, spend an hour in multiplayer in a single capture the flag style game.

Players take on the role of a Bald Eagle in Paris, France, long after humans have left the planet and nature has taken over.  In teams of 3, players fly and swoop through the city attempting to be the first to grab the prey and return it to their nest.  Players have an Eagle Shout that can bring down their opponents and a single, timed, sonic shield used for ramming.  It is a fast-paced and exciting take on a 3v3 multiplayer game and one of the best VR experiences we had so far on PlayStation VR.

The single player mode of Eagle Flight is a series of challenges scattered throughout the city, including many collectibles.  Clearing all the challenges in one area unlocks another with bigger and much more difficult ones.  Control of the eagle is extremely fluid and accurate. One of the most accurate VR experiences so far.  Flying is controlled simply by tilting your head to turn, the more you tilt, the tighter the turn.  Looking up and down makes the eagle fly up or fly down.  It’s really that simple.  Using the PS4 Dualshock controller, the triggers are used to speed up and slow down much like a driving game.  Very simple controls allow for a game that very easy to jump into and understand immediately.

Eagle Flight is a fantastic VR flight simulator and one that could easily be a system seller for PSVR.  The only caveat with the multiplayer, and one I hope gets rectified, is the lack of good matchmaking and the inability to invite your friends to join you.  Even in a party on PS4, Jeff and I were not put into the same multiplayer match on a couple of occasions.  Additionally, there is no balancing of the teams before a match starts. On several occasions, which you can see in the video below, we were on a team of 4v2, or even 2v1.  This is supposed to be a 3v3 multiplayer mode, but for whatever reason, it allows 4 people on one team while the other has only 2.  This creates a scenario that is nearly impossible for the 2 player team to win.

Regardless, Eagle Flight is an incredibly fun game and one of the best I’ve played so far on PlayStation VR.  At CAD$59.99, I only hope there are enough players out there playing multiplayer to make this a worthy purchase.  Will Eagle Flight have wings enough to last?  We’ll see.
